Residents were informed last night that they can return to their homes after a fire involving several hazardous materials at SMB Products chemical plant prompted an evacuation. Around 1pm, the Akron Fire Department responded to a fire on Rosemary Boulevard near the Akron Fulton Airport. Upon arrival, they found black smoke and flames from a commercial building; all employees had been evacuated. The fire involved chemicals such as propane, methanol, and xylene. Due to the chemicals and the extent of the flames, Akron fire said fire companies used a defensive approach to battle the fire. Residents within a half mile area were evacuated from their homes and businesses. The fire was under control shortly after 7pm; however crews remained on the scene. The EPA says the air quality is within normal limits. Residents were allowed back in their homes around 8pm.
